Each year, as part of the National Down Syndrome Congress convention, we host the Youth & Adults conference. Best we know, it is the largest gathering of people with Down syndrome that occurs regularly anywhere in the world – in 2009 almost 300 teens and adults with Down syndrome attended. Beyond its size, the Youth & Adults conference is the very center of NDSC action for people with Down syndrome. They plan and present the conference and while it is in action, participants elect one of three self-advocate directors to the NDSC board.
While serving, each self-advocate director is invited to join the NDSC Self-advocate Council which, year around, works to develop the next Youth & Adults conference and develop, with the support of the NDSC staff and a dedicated volunteer committee, a growing array of NDSC self-advocate programs and opportunities.
