Governmental Affairs Action Alert ~ January 31, 2017
BACKGROUND: Today, January 31, 2017, the Health Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee voted 12-11 to favorably refer the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education for a vote on the Senate floor. This provides ALL your Senators the chance to vote on this important cabinet position.
NDSC has reviewed the answers that Mrs. DeVos provided to questions by the HELP Committee Senators, to the extent they were shared publicly. While the answers provide general commitments to implement the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and other federal laws, there are major gaps in her answers regarding specific issues that are critically important to the disability and civil rights community. In the few instances where there was some specificity regarding civil rights issues for students with disabilities, the answers provided by Mrs. DeVos raised additional reasons to be concerned about her nomination.
Based on the answers provided at the hearing on January 17, 2017, and to the written questions submitted by Senators on the HELP Committee, NDSC continues to have serious concerns about the confirmation of Betsy DeVos.
TAKE ACTION NOW!
Call the US Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Senator’s office. To find out who your Senators are, go to: www.whoismyrepresentative.com
ACTION: Call your Senators and voice your views about the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education. Also, ask that the Senate floor vote be delayed until all the Senators have a chance to review the answers that Mrs. DeVos provided to the HELP Committee yesterday. The Senate should not rush the confirmation process for a cabinet position that has so much impact on the education of this nation’s children.
