National Service Inclusion Project

The NDSC is partnering with the National Service Inclusion Project to promote and increase the participation of individuals with disabilities in national service. Every day, people with Down syndrome are demonstrating what they can do to contribute to their communities. With appropriate supports, opportunities are available through AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps Vista, and Learn and Serve America. The opportunities vary widely depending on where you live. The NDSC wants to work with you to find meaningful service experiences through this special initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

AmeriCorps is the national service program often referred to as the "domestic Peace Corps". People who join AmeriCorps (called members) commit to a year of service, and in exchange receive a living stipend and scholarship. Even more importantly, though, AmeriCorps members receive real-life education and work experience that can lead to marketable skills and personal connections for future employment.

Every state has a commission on national and community service. These commissions act as coordinators of service programs in their states. They provide support to national service programs and are the prime administrators of AmeriCorps state grants. Many state commissions on national and community service also have disability coordinators who are responsible for ensuring that individuals with disabilities have the opportunity to actively participate in national service programs and have access to the accommodations and supports they need.

The NDSC is honored to be working with the National Service Inclusion Project to promote community service among individuals with disabilities. Our other partners in this project include the Association of University Centers on Disability, the Association on Higher Education and Disability, and the National Council on Independent Living.
