Behavior News You Can Use
Behavior can be frustrating, but the good news is that there is a science to learning and behavior that can help parents learn how to better address any behavioral concerns no matter what age or stage their child is in. These strategies don’t have to be complex or cumbersome. Some tips involve prevention, some focus more on effective consequences and, of course, we always want to focus on teaching. Come and learn about new tools for your behavior toolbox that you can actually understand and use! In this session you will learn:
- about basic behavioral principles and how the environment impacts behavior
- about functional assessment and how it can be used to treat problem behaviors
- the importance of teaching and replacing problem behaviors in order to improve outcomes
- strategies to prevent problem behaviors from occurring

In Case You Missed It This Week
Each week we’ll offer registered attendees 3-4 new sessions in a webinar format, with recordings available to access afterward. If you miss a session, not to worry! Recordings will be available for replay on a private channel through June 30. Below are the workshops presented this week.
An NDSC House Call: A Talk With the Docs – In this FREE webinar doctors Kishore Vellody, Nicole Baumer, and Peter Bulova answered questions submitted by NDSC members about COVID-19. Dr. Vellody will be following up to answer questions submitted about issues other than COVID-19 in another Ask the Doc workshop in June.
Promoting Strengths and Adaptive Resources in Persons with Down Syndrome – Presented by Dennis McGuire, Ph.D., Senior Consultant, Global Down Syndrome Foundation
We have received great reviews about this workshop in which Dr. McGuire discussed creative ways to help people with Down syndrome adapt to challenges involving the use of concrete forms of thought and behavior that limit communication, flexibility, and adaptive-ness to change. We discussed how some characteristics may be used to solve a host of other problems and concerns.
Inclusion Is for the Included: Breaking Barriers with Self-Determination and Advocacy presented by LaTaasha Byrd, President, Countdown to K, Inc.
LaTaasha talked about the social stigmas and cultural imbalances minority families face when caring for individuals with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. She highlighted differences in cultural norms and practices and shared personal and practical insight into steps families can take to break the barriers of inclusion and access to resources, even within the family unit.
We are still working on finalizing the full schedule but a list of confirmed workshops can be found here.
